After aligning your phone to the telescope's optics (a quick and easy procedure), StarSense Explorer generates a list of celestial objects currently visible. Make your selection and arrows appear on-screen, guiding you as you move the telescope. When the object is ready to view in the eyepiece, the bullseye turns green. As you observe, listen to hundreds of audio descriptions and view detailed information about thousands of objects within the app’s robust database.
High-Quality Altazimuth Base
An ultra-stable Dobsonian base provides a sturdy foundation for StarSense Explorer. It features large diameter altitude bearings with variable tensioning, Teflon azimuth bearings, and braces on the side panels for extra stability (unlike most 8” Dobsonian bases). The altitude bearings provide a smooth up-and-down motion while the integrated altitude "brake" system allows you to adjust the tension along the altitude axis for smoothest motion even with slight imbalances. The panning knob on the telescope tube provides an ergonomic grip so you can precisely point the telescope without introducing heat from your hands into the optical system. As celestial objects appear to drift across the night sky, you'll be able to easily follow them with minor adjustments to the telescope’s position.

StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly orient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database.
While other astronomy apps may claim that they can help you find objects, they rely exclusively on the phone's gyros and accelerometers, which aren't as accurate as LISA technology. No other app can accurately tell you when your target is visible in the eyepiece.

This telescope is a gamechanger. As an amateur astronomer for almost 60 years, this telescope embodies respectable size, stability, good optics and the wonderful starsense. Starsense is challenged in Bortle 1-2 skies, however. Under darker skies, I found it quite accurate. More stiction in moving in the azimuth than I like, especially near the zenith. I'm going to apply after market PTFE (teflon) pads in an effort to remedy the situation. Incredible value for the money. BTW, I've got an 8' EdgeHD as well, but this one will get more use because it sets up so quickly.

No issues. Base takes time but solid whenfinished. Will test scope when temp comes down here in West Texas.
I bought this for its independence from needing a battery and ability to use in the field. Still lasting the starsense app. Beautiful and crisp imaging
I bought this last October and have used it multiple times looking at the moon, a few planets, and I even saw a nebula. I'm a bit of a klutz and I know very little about the stars but I'm learning with this scope.The moon is very bright in the scope because of its high magnification so for viewing the moon you do need a good moon filter. At higher powers it is difficult to keep an object within view but it just takes practice with making very minor adjustments.Aligning the spotting scope with the main scope is quite easy. Collimation of the mirror is also easy with the provided instructions. I've experimented with the StarSense app and my first phone was a cheap one and I was not able to get it to figure out where it is to start using it. I got a new phone and I've been able to align it and I've started using it but have not had a lot of opportunities to do so because of poor weather.I would recommend getting additional eyepieces and filters to go with the scope as they can enhance your ability to view various objects. A strong moon filter is critical to view the moon without blinding yourself with moonlight. I just bought an adjustable moon filter because you can adjust it to filter out quite a bit of light. Now I want a solar filter.I gave the scope 5 stars for portability even though it is a really big and fairly heavy but I knew that when buying it and expected the size and bulk.
